چکیده

The relative affinities ufeondensed tannins purilied from sorghum, pinto bean, quebracho and wattle for six dissimilar protins have been determined by a competitive binding assay. The results indicate that tannin/protein interactions may be specific for different tanains as well as for different proteins. The highly specific interactions suggest that the differences in affinity are functionally significant.

Ultrasonic-assisted extraction of condensed tannin from acron, gland, leaf and gall of oak using response surface methodology

Ultrasonic technology and response surface methodology (RSM) wereused for optimization of extraction of condensed tannins from the leaf, acron, gland and gall of oak. Three independent variables such as solvent percentage (%), temperature (°C) and time (min) were studied. Effect of methanol concentration was found to be significant on all responses. Optimal ultrasonicassisted extraction (UAE) c...

Interaction of flavanoids with peptides and proteins and conformations of dimeric flavanoids in solution.

Although the physiological roles of tannins and related polyphenols in plants have not yet been clarified, their ability to form complexes with proteins or related biopolymers has been correlated with some protection of the plants from predators such as animals, insects, and microbes.’ Similarly, commercial uses of tannins, especially in the leather and brewing industries, are also based on the...

Does the differential seedling mortality caused by slugs alter the foliar traits and subsequent susceptibility of hybrid willows to a generalist herbivore?

1. Many Salicaceae species naturally form hybrid swarms with parental and hybrid taxa that differ in secondary chemical profile and in resistance to herbivores. Theoretically, the differential mortality in the seedling stage can lead to changes in trait expression and alter subsequent interactions between plants and herbivores. This study examines whether herbivory by the generalist slug Arion ...

Feeny revisited: condensed tannins as anti-herbivore defences in leaf-chewing herbivore communities of Quercus

1. Community level oak–tannin–insect patterns have been largely unexplored since Paul Feeny’s ground-breaking research. Two hypotheses were tested for Quercus velutina and Q. alba in the Missouri Ozarks: abundance and richness of leaf-chewing herbivores are negatively correlated with foliar condensed tannin concentrations and variation in condensed tannin concentrations explains variation in he...

Condensed tannins and the nutritive value of herbage

Many plant species contain condensed tannins (CT), but lotus is one of the few herbages of agricultural importance to contain CT. Lotus has a high nutritive value (NV) despite a moderate protein content and nitrogen digestibility, and this can be explained by the activity of CT during digestion. CT binds plant proteins in the rumen, reducing their solubility and degradation by rumen bacteria. C...
